Poll: 87 percent say never OK to cheat on taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With tax season in full swing, a newly released poll says an overwhelming majority of adults don't believe it is ever OK to cheat on their income taxes, with most citing personal integrity as a reason to be truthful.

When asked how much, if any, is an acceptable amount to cheat on your income taxes, 87 percent of respondents said, "not at all." Only 11 percent said, "a little here and there" or "as much as possible."

Ninety-five percent said personal integrity influences them to honestly report their taxes, while 63 percent said fear of an audit did. Only 41 percent said they are honest because they believe their neighbors are, too.

The telephone poll of 1,500 randomly chosen adults was sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service Oversight Board, which released the findings Tuesday. The findings are in line with previous surveys done by the board.

Board Chairman Paul Cherecwich Jr. noted the importance of honesty in a tax system that asks people to report their own financial information. There are many backstops in the system, with employers and financial institutions also reporting taxpayer information to the IRS. But the IRS only audits 1 percent of individual returns each year, according to agency statistics.

"Personal integrity is at the core of our self-assessment tax system," Cherecwich said. "The overwhelming majority of American taxpayers play by the rules and expect everyone else to do the same."

Forty-three percent said they think the IRS maintains a proper balance between tax enforcement and taxpayer service; 30 percent said they think the agency devotes too many resources to enforcement.

Elizabeth Maresca, a former trial attorney for the IRS, said most taxpayers don't have much of an opportunity to cheat on their taxes.

Two-thirds of individual filers don't itemize their deductions, instead taking the standard deduction. And for those who do itemize, many of their claims are verified by financial institutions that are required to notify the IRS.

For example, if you earn interest on a bank account or pay interest on a home mortgage, financial institutions send forms to both you and the IRS. Employers send wage information to the IRS.

"The vast majority of people, I think, don't even have an opportunity to cheat on their taxes," said Maresca, an associate law professor at Fordham University. "They are so limited in what they can do and take and what breaks they are entitled to. You can't pretend that you have a kid you don't have. You can't claim your dog."

The survey comes as federal agencies, including the IRS, brace for automatic spending cuts known as the sequester, which is scheduled to take effect Friday. In a letter to Congress, the Treasury Department said the IRS won't be able to review as many tax returns if the sequester takes effect, which "could result in billions of dollars in lost revenue and further complicate deficit reduction efforts." The agency didn't offer specifics, but said, "In recent years each dollar spent on the IRS has returned at least $4 in additional enforcement revenue."

In the poll, 62 percent of respondents said the IRS should receive extra funding to enforce tax laws and ensure taxpayers pay what they owe. Sixty-seven percent said the IRS should get more money to assist taxpayers by phone and in person.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 30 to Sep. 17 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,500 randomly chosen adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Lohan's attorney seeks deal with prosecutors

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lindsay Lohan's attorney has suggested to prosecutors that the actress serve as a motivational speaker and perform non-jail activities to resolve her latest criminal case, according to a letter obtained Tuesday.

The letter from lawyer Mark Heller proposed several alternatives for Lohan, who could be sent to jail if a judge determines her actions in a traffic crash violated terms of her probation in a previous theft case.

His letter states that Lohan's turbulent home life has deeply impacted her and requires a different approach in the case.

The actress plans to spend time recording public service announcements and make "periodic visits to schools, hospitals, and other venues where she may provide inspirational talks, encouraging children to pursue positive goals and avoid bad habits," states the letter filed on Friday and released by the court Tuesday.

Heller also proposed the establishment of a nonprofit foundation in Lohan's name to benefit young people.

The actress "has made a commitment to herself to elevate her life and participate in activities which will advance her desire to lead a model life," Heller wrote in a motion seeking a delay in the case that returns to court on Friday. Trial is now set for March 18.

Lohan is charged with three misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, lying to police and obstructing officers from performing their duties. She has pleaded not guilty.

The actress could face 245 days in jail if she is found to be in violation of her probation.

The star of "Mean Girls" and "Freaky Friday" was sentenced to psychotherapy in November of 2011 in cases involving theft and drunken driving charges, but she has not been required to attend counseling since being placed on informal probation in March 2012.

Those terms were imposed by Judge Stephanie Sautner, who is retiring and will no longer handle Lohan's case.

The crash that prompted the current charges occurred in June on Pacific Coast Highway while Lohan was on the way to a movie shoot.

Terry White, chief deputy city attorney in Santa Monica, declined comment on the letter. He said discussions about a possible resolution are scheduled to take place this week.

Lohan, 26, was on her way to a beach shoot with another person for the TV movie "Liz and Dick" when her car crashed into the back of a dump truck. Police allege she lied about being behind the wheel.

Heller is also seeking dismissal of the charges against Lohan, arguing that police ignored her when she said she didn't want to be interviewed without her attorney present.

Lohan was at the hospital at the time, not in custody, and showed no signs of impairment when officers gave her a field sobriety test, the lawyer said.

Back to basics ? The Standard

Looks like we?re in for another round of ?back to basics? nonsense in mathematics education from a bunch of politicians who know more about their own prejudices than they do about teaching and learning:

Govt eyes back to basics in maths

Education Minister Hekia Parata is considering a return to basic arithmetic for primary school children in an attempt to lift New Zealand?s faltering performance in maths.

New Zealand 9-year-olds finished last-equal in maths among peers in developed countries, in a survey published in December. Almost half could not add 218 and 191 in a test.

Officials analysing the results of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) test found there were ?significant proportions? of Year 5 children who could not add or subtract simple numbers.

I haven?t seen the specific data cited, but in the TIMSS 2011 report overall our performance in maths was only slightly below average ? and note that our children are younger when assessed:

So, England, Malta, and New Zealand, where students start school at a young age, were assessed in their fifth year of schooling, but still have among the youngest students and are reported together with the fourth grade countries.

In other international measures of our maths (and general educational achievement) NZ does from OK to quite well. The achievement of our 15 year olds in PISA measures of Maths is above the OECD average:

It also looks like our performance rises under Labour governments and falls under National.

Be that as it may, the main reason not to charge off on another mad educational brain-fart is that ?back to basics? doesn?t work. Wander the educational literature for yourselves, here?s just a couple of examples from the American experience:

The ?problem-solving? movement of the 1980s arose partly in response to the realisation that student mastery of the basics had not significantly improved after a decade of emphasis on core skills.

Once agin the Nats are hell-bent on following American educational ?theory? that is both decades old and well discredited.

If the Nats truly wanted to raise educational achievement there are two issues that they need to address, resourcing and poverty. Resourcing ? the NZ educational system does very well on funding that is (by international standards) very low. Arguably, NZ has best value for money education in the world.

Poverty ? all our educational performance stats are pervaded by the issue of socio-economic status / race:

We come seventh in the world in the PISA (Programme for International Student Achievement) rankings that compare national performance in reading, science and maths. But Parata says that once you disaggregate the PISA scores, Pakeha students are second in the world and Maori are 34th and Pasifika are 44th.

So in short ? ?back to basics? doesn?t work and isn?t needed. If we want to raise educational achievement we need to address poverty in NZ. But that?s not a message that the Nats want to hear.

Administration warns of impact of broad budget cut

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Widespread flight delays and shuttered airports, off-limit seashores and unprotected parks.

The Obama administration is painting a dire portrait of the many ways the public will feel the effects of automatic federal spending cuts due to begin March 1.

The grim picture is emerging as the White House and lawmakers count down the days until the government is forced to trim $85 billion in domestic and defense spending with hardly any leeway to save some programs from the budget knife.

In detailing the costs of the cuts, President Barack Obama is seeking to raise the public's awareness while also applying pressure on congressional Republicans who oppose his blend of targeted savings and tax increases to tackle federal deficits.

"I've been very clear that these kinds of arbitrary, automatic cuts would have an adverse impact on families, on teachers, on parents who are reliant on Head Start programs, on our military readiness, on mental health services, on medical research," Obama said Friday. "This is not a smart way for us to reduce the deficit."

Just in case those consequences didn't capture the public's attention, the White House also had Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood spell out the impact on travelers: a frequent-flier nightmare of 90-minute airport waits, limited flights and closed regional airports. Republican lawmakers dismissed LaHood's warnings as "exaggerations."

But LaHood said the cuts would require slicing more than $600 million from the Federal Aviation Administration, resulting in furloughs of one day per pay period for a majority of the agency's 47,000 employees.

"Once airlines see the potential impact of these furloughs, we expect that they will change their schedules and cancel flights," LaHood said.

Moreover, he said, the Transportation Department is looking "to likely close" air traffic control towers at 100 airports that have fewer than 150,000 flight operations per year.

"We're talking about places like Boca Raton, Fla.; Joplin, Mo.; Hilton Head, S.C.; and San Marcos, Texas," he said. All in all, nearly two-thirds of the airports are concentrated in three states ? California, Florida and Texas.

But in a statement, Airlines for America, an industry group, said the organization, the FAA and airline carriers would be meeting soon to plan for potential cutbacks. "Air transportation is a key driver of our economy, and should not be used as a political football," the statement said.

Paul Rinaldi, the president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, said the reductions will not just inconvenience passengers, it will also affect local economies and result in more lost jobs. "The fact that they will not just be furloughing critical FAA personnel but closing air traffic control towers means the system will be even more compromised than anticipated," he added.

Still, top Republicans on congressional transportation and aviation panels accused the administration of unnecessary alarm.

"Before jumping to the conclusion that furloughs must be implemented, the administration and the agency need to sharpen their pencils and consider all the options," the lawmakers said in a joint statement issued by Rep. Bill Shuster, chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure; Sen. John Thune, the top Republican on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation; and Frank LoBiondo, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Aviation.

Throughout the administration, agency heads have been depicting an onerous after-effect to the cuts. The federal government is required to spell out the consequences to federal workers, but the details are also designed to warn lawmakers that the cuts could have a fearsome result: angry constituents. Some of the warnings:

? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta last week said that automatic cuts, known in Washington budget language as a sequester, would harm the readiness of U.S. fighting forces and he said the "vast majority" of the Defense Department's 800,000 civilian workers would have to lose one day of work per week, or 20 percent of their pay, for up to 22 weeks, probably starting in late April. The biggest potential losses, in term of total civilian payroll dollars, would be in Virginia, California, Maryland, Texas and Georgia, according to figures provided by the Pentagon.

? On Friday, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said cuts of more than $300 million to his agency would mean less money to solve outbreaks, fight hospital infections and keep illnesses overseas from making their way here. For instance, Dr. Tom Frieden said, the cuts could limit the agency's investigation of a tuberculosis outbreak in Los Angeles.

? At the National Park Service, employees would be furloughed, hours would be cut and sensitive areas would be blocked off to the public when there are staff shortages, according to a park service memo obtained by The Associated Press.

The giant sequoias at Yosemite National Park in California would go unprotected from visitors who might trample their shallow roots. At Cape Cod National Seashore, large sections of the Great Beach would close to keep eggs from being destroyed if natural resource managers are cut. Programs on the chopping block include invasive species eradication in Yosemite and comfort stations on the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi.

Gettysburg would decrease by one-fifth the number of school children who learn about the historic battle that was a turning point in the Civil War. And in Yosemite, park administrators fear that less frequent trash pickup would potentially attract bears into campgrounds.

Over the years, budget threats have inevitably resulted in grim warnings, no matter which administration, about calamitous consequences. Many have been avoided; others have been short-lived. But Obama administration officials say they are not exaggerating or bluffing.

The cuts, with few exceptions, are designed to hit all accounts equally. The law gives Obama little leeway to ease the pain.

Even if granted flexibility to apply the cuts with more discretion ? a legislative step Republicans say they might pursue ? White House officials say that would still require severe reductions.

"It's essentially rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic," Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said of such a proposal in a recent interview.

LaHood, in response to a question, denied that he was simply describing a worst-case scenario that would scare the public and put pressure on Republican lawmakers.

"What I'm trying to do," he said, "is wake up members of the Congress with the idea that they need to come to the table so we don't have to have this kind of calamity in air services in America."

Sherwin-Williams pays $80 million to settle U.S. labor department probe

(Reuters) - Sherwin-Williams Co has reached a settlement deal with the U.S. Department of Labor related to the U.S. paint maker's employee stock ownership plan by making a one-time payment of $80 million to the plan, the firm said on Wednesday.

The company - which markets paints including Dutch Boy, Krylon, Minwax and Water Seal as well as its namesake brand - said the payment will result in an after-tax charge to earnings of $49.2 million, or 47 cents per share, in its fourth quarter, ended December 31, 2012.

"The settlement will result in payments totaling $80 million to current and former participants in the plan as well as to their beneficiaries," the Department of Labor said in a statement issued to Reuters.

The settlement also requires Illinois-based trustee GreatBanc Trust Company to undergo an audit of its pension plan activities, the Labor Department said.

In January, the company posted a fourth-quarter profit of $1.12 per share on revenue of $2.22 billion.

Sherwin-Williams said the agreement will not have an effect on its full-year 2013 earnings forecast issued on January 31, 2013.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to halt the execution of a man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend at her apartment by tossing gasoline on her and then setting her on fire.

The high court made its decision Thursday evening, shortly before 48-year-old Carl Blue was scheduled to be executed in Texas.

Blue was sentenced to die for the September 1994 death of Carmen Richards-Sanders. The 38-year-old woman and a man with her were attacked at her apartment in Bryan, about 100 miles northwest of Houston. The man survived serious burns and testified against Blue.

Prosecutors said the attack was the result of jealousy. Blue said it was a prank gone wrong or an accident.

His death will be the first execution this year in the nation's most active death penalty state.

Strike by Indian unions over prices hits transport, banking

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Many Indian banks were closed and public transport disrupted on Wednesday because of a strike by trade unions protesting against high prices but the capital, New Delhi, and business centre, Mumbai, were mostly unaffected and financial markets were open.

Violence erupted in some places on the first day of a two-day strike as workers, angry about high fuel prices in particular, tried to keep vehicles off the roads. One union member was killed in the northern city of Ambala, media said.

The strike comes as the beleaguered government prepares to present an austerity budget to parliament and as it weathers a corruption scandal in a big arms deal.

Parliament begins its budget session on Thursday and the government is to present its expenditure plan for fiscal 2013/14 (April-March) next week.

Several officials have told Reuters the government will slash a public spending target by up to 10 percent to avoid a sovereign credit downgrade, even though that will not go down well in a high inflation environment.

The government is also on the back foot over accusations by Italian police that officials from defense group Finmeccanica paid bribes in a $750 million deal to sell India VIP helicopters manufactured by its Anglo-Italian subsidiary AgustaWestland.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is grappling with the worst economic slowdown in a decade and faces a general election early next year, had asked the unions to call off the strike, but they refused.

"We want the government to take note of this," said Akhtar Hussain, vice-president of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, or Indian Workers' Union. "They think they can turn a blind eye to our demands, but they must know that enough is enough. We need our demands to be met. The government needs to be more serious."

In New Delhi and Mumbai, bus and suburban train services were running without disruption. Some taxis were off the roads but offices and schools were open.

Elsewhere, however, public transport was not running, banks were closed and most shops and offices kept their shutters down.

In Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha state in the east, protesters set fire to effigies of Singh and ruling Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi. Several trains were stranded at stations as protesters blocked railway tracks.

In the western state of Gujarat, close to 8,000 state-owned buses were off the roads, officials said. Banking services were also disrupted as thousands of bank employees joined the strike.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry said on Tuesday that the two-day strike was expected to cause an estimated loss of 150 billion-200 billion rupees ($2.8 billion-$3.8 billion), hurting sectors such as banking, insurance and transport.

House GOP majority leader calls World of Warcraft research grant 'government waste'

A 2012 study into the cognitive effects of video game playing by older adults was targeted by U.S. House majority leader Eric Cantor in a statement today which called for "common sense" budget reform.

"The National Science Foundation spent $1.2 million paying seniors to play World of Warcraft to study the impact it had on their brain," reads the statement from Cantor, calling the "pay to play video games" study an example of government waste.

Cantor seems to be referring to a study by the Gains Through Gaming Lab in the Department of Psychology at the North Carolina State University titled "Putting fun into aging - overcoming usability and motivational issues in video games for older adults." (PDF)

The lab says its research primarily focuses on how games can improve cognitive functioning and "identifying the video games and conditions under which they are played, that provide the greatest benefit to various domains of psychological functioning."

Highlights from the study, which saw adults over the age of 65 play World of Warcraft, indicate that older adults with "initially worse abilities appear to benefit more from cognitive training."

The cost of the study ranks low in terms of dollars compared to spending elsewhere. Cantor's statement also targets "federal government waste" like $2.2 billion in free cell phones, $100 million in EPA grants to foreign countries over the past decade and $1.7 billion in maintaining properties "not in use or underutilized" in 2010.

Ted's version: While enjoying the shrimp cocktail, Robin alerts him that The Captain just walked in. In this rendition, The Captain is rude and unpleasant to Ted, so much so that when he invites the trio to his upstairs apartment he threatens Ted with a harpoon gun. Ted then notices that the photograph The Captain holds near and dear to his heart is that of Becky (remember Robin's overly perky past co-anchor?), whom Ted resumed dating. He is afraid that's why The Captain is looking for him but when he finally takes his call, he discovers The Captain wants Robin's number.

Robin's version: Ted smoked a serious sandwich before showing up at the gallery and his memory of The Captain acting obnoxious was a result thereof (his spoken-out-loud internal monologue is one the show's most LOL-worthy moments). In Robin's version of events The Captain comes on to her rather crudely and when she turns him down, she asks him to call her in a year and a half after he's done rebounding. In her opinion, that's why he's looking for her. But when she calls him back she discovers it isn't her The Captain is looking for, it's Lily.

Lily's version: Ted was baked, Robin was smashed, and Lily tried to keep it from getting embarrassing. When The Captain waltzed in with his art consultant, Lily tried to give her professional two cents only to be ridiculed by the condescending expert, and later at The Captain's apartment, by him. In her recollection, when The Captain showed her his new painting she told him she liked another one better, the one with the elephants. He brashly told her she knows nothing about art because she is just a kindergarten teacher. As punishment, she stole his priceless crystal ashtray.

Present day Marshall begs Lily to return the ashtray to The Captain before he presses charges. She initially refuses and bursts into tears, claiming his remark hurt most because it was true. She is just a kindergarten teacher and has done nothing with her art degree. In an incredibly poignant moment, Marshall tells Lily it's never too late for her to pursue her dreams: "I promise you, your best and your most exciting days are all ahead of you," to which Lily replies: "there gets to be a point in life where that just stops being true." Nevertheless, she agrees to right her wrong.

The end: The Captain didn't even notice his ashtray was missing. Instead, he called Lily because he ended up buying that elephant painting the night of the art exhibit. He liked how she just liked it, no artsy fartsy reasoning to it. Now, a year and a half later, he sold it for four million dollars. Lily's keen eye for the next Basquiat earned her The Captain's respect and a job offer - to be his art consultant. And though it's not quite what she had in mind when Marshall urged her to rekindle her romance with art, she agrees.

Vegas Mayor Disappointed Over Cheating Allegations

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly reported that interim Fire Chief Scott Fuller of Las Vegas?resigned Wednesday. Fuller remains the interim fire chief. 8 News Now regrets the?error.?

LAS VEGAS -- An investigation has been launched into allegations of widespread cheating among the latest group of recruits for the City of Las Vegas Fire Department.

The city launched this investigation as a result of an incident that took place during a written exam at the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Academy. The academy is 20 weeks long.

Because of the investigation, the recruits' graduation that was supposed to take place Thursday was canceled.

The fire department declined to comment on the allegations.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman called the cheating allegations disappointing.

"It's a tough job to get, and a tough job to do," she said.

Twice a year, hundreds apply to be a Las Vegas firefighter, with only about 30 actually making it to the recruiting class.

The class that was supposed to graduate Thursday had 14 recruits.

The reward? A sizable salary and honored place in the community.

Reporter: Is there an incentive to cheat, to try and keep this position?

Goodman responded, "That's a difficult question. I mean, there's always wonderful people in our world. Thank heavens they outweigh those who might shortcut and do different things. I'm just not a believer that anything's really happened."

The academy's recruits go through rigorous state practical and written tests to become a firefighter.

It was during an exam a city spokesperson said cheating may have occurred, something Goodman said she hopes is not the case.

"At this point it's under investigation," she said. "Just for that alone that makes me sad."

According to the Nevada State Fire Marshal's Office, the firefighter's written test consists of about 100 questions selected at random from a pool of 500 to 600.

Nevada State Fire Marshal Chief Peter Mulvihill said he believes the test is passable.

"If the student studies and applies themselves, they can be successful," he said.

The local firefighters union declined comment, other than saying it's a personnel issue and they "fully support the investigation."

In a statement released to 8 News NOW Wednesday night, Las Vegas spokesman David Riggleman said, "Integrity is a core value of the city of Las Vegas and allegations of this nature are taken very seriously."

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Chief Mike Myers just resigned from his position last week.

Goodman said that his resignation was "absolutely not" related to the cheating allegations.

They only reason the chief resigned is because his wife accepted a new position across the country.

The Black Keys' Patrick Carney has changed his name to Justin Bieber on Twitter, as his feud with the singer continues.

Last week, Justin Bieber said that Carney needs 'slapping' after the drummer criticised his music at the Grammys. Carney reacted to the comment by changing his Twitter, and now claims to be Justin Bieber to antagonise the pop brat's fans.

Here's just one of the many Tweets where he claims to be Bieber:

Earlier today (February 17), Carney took the internet hoax one step further by posting a link to the "new world premier" of a Justin Bieber track. However, the link is directed to a YouTube video of DEVO's 'Recombo DNA (demo)'.

Bieber fans have reacted badly to Carney's name change and they have been bombarding him with insults and negative comments. One fan tweeted, "Justin one joke about u and think it's ok to hate on Justin for attention???? Your life must be so sad," while another simply said: "Someone needs to take a pencil and shove it so far up your ass that you can't walk for months."

Justin Bieber is yet to comment on Patrick Carney's new Twitter name. The singer is currently on a European tour.

NFL boosts Goodell pay to $29M

National Football League owners nearly tripled Commissioner Roger Goodell?s compensation in 2011, paying him $29.49M and likely making him the top paid commissioner in sports.

The figure is in the league?s tax return, which the NFL was scheduled to file with the IRS by the end of the day Friday. Most of the pay is in the form of a $22.3M bonus, a compensation structure that will continue into the future. Goodell?s pay is now more closely tied to his performance and not largely derived from a set salary, which was $3.12M in '11. He earned $11.6M total in '10.

Goodell in '11 helped ink a 10-year labor deal and lucrative new TV contracts, so it is unclear if this '11 pay reflects a high water mark of sorts. Goodell?s aim is to dramatically increase NFL revenues, so if he is successful, it then stands to reason his compensation would remain in the mid- to high-$20M range. The NFL declined to comment on the information in the tax return, which by law it must make available if requested. The return covers the '11 season.

?The NFL is the most successful and best-managed sports league in the world,? said Falcons Owner and Compensation Committee Chair Arthur Blank in a prepared statement. ?This is in no small part due to Roger?s leadership and the value he brings to the table in every facet of the sport and business of the league. His compensation reflects that.?

NBA Commissioner David Stern and MLB Commissioner Bud Selig are thought to earn in the mid $20M range. MLB?s and the NBA?s tax returns are not public because they are structured as for-profit groups. ?The concept is if Roger and the league performs, as the best league in the United States, he should be compensated consistent with that,? said SportsCorp President Marc Ganis, who has close ties to NFL management. Goodell?s contract runs through '19.

The next highest paid NFL exec in '11 was General Counsel Jeff Pash, who earned $8.8M, of which $5.9M was a bonus. Pash was the chief labor negotiator during the CBA strife. NFL Exec VP/Media and NFL Network President & CEO Steve Bornstein, who in past years has been the top paid exec at the NFL, earned $5.7M, of which $2.6M was a bonus.

Report: Justin Verlander Says No to Team USA and 2013 World Baseball Classic

In a move that Detroit Tigers fans wanted to hear, Justin Verlander told Joe Torre and Team USA that he will not be pitching in this year?s World Baseball Classic.

At a press conference today in Lakeland, Fla., Verlander (via Bob Nightengale) said the reason he gave was that he is behind schedule this year and does not want to fall further behind:

Tigers fans will be happy that he will not be pitching meaningful baseball before the start of the season as Detroit tries to repeat as American League champions.

Coming off a year which saw Verlander go 17?8 with an ERA of 2.64 and a league-high strikeout total of 239, the feeling starting the season is that Verlander?s focus needs to be on the Tigers the entire time.

Still this is a definite blow for Team USA?s chances in the upcoming WBC.

Torre, USA?s manager this time around, really wanted to have the ace on his roster as the group?which contains Canada, Mexico and the Dominican Republic?is one of the toughest in pool play.

With a weak American team and the loaded Japanese and Venezuelan rosters awaiting in the later rounds, the chances of team USA winning the classic are very slim.

While Major League Baseball?s corporate office in New York will be scratching their heads as to how they can get better participation from American players in the future, Detroit fans will no longer have to worry about Verlander taxing himself too much too early.

Lumio desk lamp takes light reading literally (video)

With the future of reading heading squarely in the direction of electronic devices, what to do with the old timey book form? Build a lamp, of course. During a recent visit to the City by the Bay, we popped into the TechShop hackerspace and were introduced to Max Gunawan, the designer behind Lumio (not to be confused with a certain smartphone line of similar name). The product, developed in that very space, offers up a cool take on the desktop lamp, fitting it into a wooden, old timey-looking book form. Open it up and the pages fan out into what looks like a paper lantern.

It's an LED light powered by a lithium ion battery that'll give you around eight hours on a charge. Due to the foldable nature of the Lumio, the device is portable and can be opened into a number of configurations, to suit your needs. Gunawan is a couple of days away from launching a Kickstarter page for the project, in hopes of getting together $60,000. Interested funders will be able to pick one up for around $95 -- wait for it to come to market, and that price will jump to around $125 or $135.

Judith Orloff MD: How to Intuitively Make Smart Decisions

As an intuitive psychiatrist, I worship my high-octane intuitions: I owe the blessing of becoming a physician to one. However, at 20, when an unwavering inner voice told me I was going to medical school, it was the last thing I thought I wanted. This gut-centered voice committed to your happiness, health, and survival is, with practice, accessible to everyone. But when you deviate even a nano-fraction from your inner voice, energy wanes, whether a subtle seepage or radical bottoming-out. The more ferociously faithful you are to this truth, the more energized you'll be.

Intuition offers a direct line to your life force, and also, as I experience it, to a divine intelligence. We can't afford to remain deaf to intuition's messages. Its expertise is energy; its job is to know every nuance of what makes you tick. A master at reading vibes, intuition is constantly tallying: what gives positive energy, what dissipates it. Who you meet, where you go, your job, your family, current events, are all evaluated -- crucial data that you can learn to interpret and apply.

Here's a formula from my book Positive Energy to help you get started. First, listen to your body: There are positive and negative intuitions about relationships, which highlight compatible matches. Second, act on this information, which is often the hardest part. Let me walk you through the process.

Recognize Your Body's Intuitions About Vibes

A people-skill most of our parents didn't know or teach us is intuitively reading vibes. We've learned to draw conclusions from surface data: how nice someone seems, looks, education, or if a situation adds up on paper. But intuition goes deeper; to make it work for you, other ingredients must be considered, such as what positive vibes feel like -- for instance, a sense of heart, compassion, and nurturance. In contrast, negative people project prickly, draining vibes that put you on guard.

Here is a general guideline of body-based intuitions. Use this checklist at a first meeting, to troubleshoot problems if you're already involved, or to weigh "opportunities." Also, feel free to add to it. Being an intuitive, I know that a signature energy always accompanies situations or people. Remember the Lil' Abner jinxed cartoon character who always had a black cloud hanging over his head? Not a vibe that bodes well for auspicious outcomes. Instead, learn to gravitate toward brightness, a positive intuition your body's responses will affirm. When tuning into vibes, take a few quiet moments to go into sensing mode, not intellectual analysis. Look for these signs to determine attraction.

Positive Intuitions About Relationships or Situations

• A feeling of comforting familiarity or brightness, you may sense you've known the person before, as with the experience of deja-vu
• You breathe easier, chest and shoulders are relaxed, gut is calm
• You find yourself leaning forward, not defensively crossing your arms or edging away to keep a distance
• Your heart opens; you feel safe, peaceful, energized, expansive, or alive
• You're at ease with a person's touch, whether a handshake, hug, or during intimacy

Negative Intuitions About Relationships or Situations

• A sick feeling in the pit of your stomach or increased stomach acid, which may prompt an unpalatable deja-vu
• Your skin starts crawling, you're jumpy, instinctively withdraw if touched
• Shoulder muscles are in knots, chest area or throat constricts; you notice aggravated aches or pains
• The hair on the back of your neck creepily stands on end
• A sense of malaise, darkness, pressure, agitation, or being drained

Intuition helps you act from instinct, not impulse -- a look-before-you-leap wisdom that points you to positive energy. When it comes to who you love, where you work, or any important decision, the last thing you want to be is vague. Tuning in keeps you specific. Practice the next exercise to get this down.

With Intuition, Learn How to Pin Down and Act on Your Vibes

Now you're going to tune in, trust your body, and make choices based on the vibes you sense.

Tune In: Choose a relationship or situation that needs clarification about whether or not to go forward. Perhaps a friendship, vacation or move. Begin with an easier target before you take on higher stakes. Run it by this section's criteria for positive and negative intuitions -- or others you find reliable. It's helpful to make a "top five" list of the most killer indicators of positive attraction. For one of my patients, it includes feeling energized and safe. Another must register an increased aliveness and peaceful sense. Write your top five in a journal so they don't get hazy. See how they add up here.

Act on Vibes: This is where we must be warriors. I know personally and from patients how much easier it is to tune into than to act on vibes. Insecurity, ego, lust, stubbornness can obscure better judgment. Sometimes it takes succumbing to them all to realize you won't tolerate such battering again. But if you don't have to take such a bumpy route, try these options. If the vibes feel overall positive, go for it; explore possibilities. If the vibes are mixed or you're unsure, take a pass, or at least wait. If there's just negative, have the courage to walk away, no matter how tempting the option seems. Then observe how listening to energy in this way leads you to the juiciest opportunities.

Now I want you to start listening. Really listening. I guarantee you'll start making smarter choices. Why? You'll be operating from a spot inside that's juicy, core-felt, authentic -- not from an impulse to conform or disown your strength. You won't be seduced by what may look good, but betrays your gut. Intuition is a truth detector.

Email hacker reveals Bush family photos, addresses

(Reuters) - The Secret Service is investigating the hacking of email accounts belonging to members of the Bush family that divulged correspondence, addresses, phone numbers and a picture of a self-portrait painted by former President George W. Bush standing in a shower.

A report on the Smoking Gun website, said the pilfered emails provided a rare glimpse into the private lives of one of America's most powerful political dynasties. The Bushes are only the second family in U.S. history to send a father and son to the White House.

The website said a hacker known as Guccifer raided the email accounts and posted the photos online. The pictures include an image of former President George H.W. Bush, who was released from a Houston hospital last month after seven weeks of treatment for bronchitis and related ailments, in a hospital bed.

Another photo showed the elder Bush, 88, posing outside a home with Bill Clinton, who was president between the two Bushes.

The intercepted photos also featured a portrait painted by George W. Bush of himself showering. It shows a gray-headed man, nude from the waist up, regarding the viewer with Bush-like features from the reflection in a shaving mirror. Another painting in the same style shows a pair of legs in a bathtub.

"I really like the paintings of George W. Bush," New York magazine art critic Jerry Saltz wrote Friday.

Saltz, who normally reserves his criticism for the likes of French painter Henri Matisse, found the president's portraiture "wonderful, unself-conscious, intense."

Other photos showed Bush painting a picture of a house and posing with a cut-out of himself in an artist's smock, beret and mustache.

SIX EMAIL ACCOUNTS HIT

The Smoking Gun site, known for posting legal documents and arrest records related to celebrities, said the hacker invaded six email accounts, including one belonging to Dorothy Bush Koch, daughter of George H.W. Bush, as well as other Bush family members and friends.

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating whether former President George H.W. Bush's email was hacked as well, the agency said on Friday. A Bush family spokesman declined to comment.

Among the material that was lifted were an October 2012 list of home addresses, cell phone numbers and email addresses for the former presidents and other relatives, according to the Smoking Gun.

The site said the emails revealed that when the elder Bush was in poor health, George W. Bush wrote his siblings the day after Christmas to say he was "thinking about eulogy."

"Hopefully I'm jumping the gun," he said, "but since the feeling is that you all would rather me speak than bubba, please help."

"Bubba" is a well-known sobriquet for Clinton.

Since leaving office in 2009, Bush has taken up painting portraits of Texas landscapes and dogs. He has live a reserved life, largely hidden from view, with his wife, Laura, in Dallas.

Bush is likely to make a more sustained return to the spotlight when his presidential library, located at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, is completed and dedicated in April.

Bing Pulse launching with help from Fox News, aims to make State of the Union speech more interactive

Just in time for next week's State of the Union address, Bing announced it's teamed up with Fox News to launch Bing Pulse, a one-stop hub where folks can easily interact and share their thoughts with one another while President Barack Obama's speech is taking place. The Microsoft-owned search engine says that Pulse will allow participants to vote on reactions to the event every five seconds, with the impending results being shown on the Bing Politics site. What's more, Bing believes "this will be the largest live online poll in history," which will be enhanced by the outfit's new Beat "social sentiment tracker" -- a service that's set to collect and analyze data from Twitter in order to figure out what are the trendiest political topics during the speech. Green shoots Spurs past Timberwolves 104-94

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? A nationally televised game with Commissioner David Stern in the house, and there sat Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

No controversy or fines coming this time. Duncan and Ginobili were both out with legitimate injuries for the San Antonio Spurs, who taught the Minnesota Timberwolves a lesson on how to handle adversity.

Danny Green hit eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points to help the Spurs to their 11th straight win, 104-94 over the Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

Tony Parker had 31 points and eight assists and Kawhi Leonard added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who kept right on rolling without two of their big three.

"I think they do have a confidence level. The system doesn't change when guys are out," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "If Tony was out, somebody else would play. We just run the same stuff, we don't change anything. I think they're pretty used to the execution no matter who's on the court. Obviously you've got to make shots and Danny and Kawhi were pretty good at that tonight."

Nikola Pekovic had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Derrick Williams added 15 points and 12 boards for the Timberwolves, who added do-it-all forward Andrei Kirilenko (bruised right quadriceps) to a seemingly endless list of injured players.

Still, the game was tied at 77 with 8 minutes to go, but Green hit two 3s and scored on a putback to put the Spurs back in front for good.

"It came out of nowhere. Sometimes it happens that way," Green said. "I got a little rhythm going, guys started looking for me and they started falling. We needed it."

Unlike the Spurs' game at Miami in November, when Popovich sent Duncan, Ginobili, Parker and Green home early to rest, drawing Stern's wrath, the coach had an excuse this time around. Duncan has a sprained left knee and Ginobili has been bothered by a nagging left hamstring injury.

"Timmy's missed four, five games in a row, Manu's been in and out of the lineup, so we've gotten used to playing without them," Parker said. "Obviously I'd rather have them because it would be a lot easier to have Timmy and Manu, but it definitely helps the other guys."

Whether his big stars have been injured or just needed the night off, the rest of the Spurs have never laid down. With Parker on the throttle and Green hitting every 3-pointer in sight, the Spurs were able to pull away from the Wolves. Green only missed four times in 12 attempts and scored 11 straight points for the Spurs in the fourth quarter.

"You've got to play perfect for 48 minutes to beat that team," Pekovic said.

San Antonio's nine-game road trip began with some good news when there was no structural damage in Duncan's left knee. He was hurt after taking a nasty fall in a game against the Wizards, an injury that first was feared to be season-ending. He is day to day.

"It looked awful," Popovich said before the game. "He just kind of grinded the bones there, bone on bone."

The Spurs improved to 21-1 against losing teams and have not lost a game since Jan. 11 at Memphis in overtime.

J.J. Barea scored 15 points for Minnesota and Mickael Gelabale made a last push to have his second 10-day contract extended into a deal for the rest of the season with 10 points. Ricky Rubio had 11 assists, but was just 3 for 13 from the field.

The injury-plagued Timberwolves (18-28) have won only twice in their last 15 games, with a season that started with playoff aspirations in danger of swirling down the drain.

"We can't worry about who is not here," coach Rick Adelman said. "We have to play with the people we have."

NOTES: The Spurs and Timberwolves are at the forefront of the NBA's international movement. The teams combine to have 13 foreign players on their rosters. At one point in the second quarter, seven international players were on the floor with just three Americans. ... Timberwolves F Kevin Love returned to the team for the first time since having surgery on his right hand Jan. 15. Love is expected to be out until mid-March after breaking two bones in his hand for the second time this season. ... Rubio picked up a technical foul from official Joey Crawford for gesturing after not getting a foul call in the first quarter.
